Formwork Support: Their most common use is supporting the "shuttering" (molds) for freshly poured concrete slabs until they cure.
Structural Alterations: Used to safely support a ceiling or wall when removing a load-bearing wall or installing a new lintel.
Trench Shoring: When used horizontally (as trench struts), they prevent soil collapse in excavations.
Emergency Stabilization: Used by rescue services to stabilize buildings damaged by fire, impact, or natural disasters.

Critical Safety Considerations

Verticality: Props must be installed perfectly plumb (vertical). Even a slight tilt drastically reduces their load-bearing capacity.
Stable Base: Always use a sole plate (a timber or steel plate) under the base of the prop to distribute the load, especially on soft or uneven ground.
Lateral Bracing: When used in a grid, props should be braced together horizontally to prevent "buckling" or folding under pressure.
Load Limits: Never exceed the Safe Working Load (SWL) marked on the prop. Note that a prop's capacity decreases as it is extended to its maximum height.
